Carbon Revolution Collaborating with General Motors
The news that Carbon Revolution (CREV) would provide the carbon fiber wheels for the recently introduced Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is the company’s third partnership with General Motors (GM) on Corvette models. With the help of its vast engineering and production experience, the Carbon Revolution team has created a wheel that goes well with the Corvette ZR1’s high performance features.
The one-piece carbon fiber wheels designed by Carbon Revolution are significantly lighter than the aluminum alternatives, reducing the Corvette ZR1’s rotating, unsprung mass by 42.8 pounds (19.4 kg) across the vehicle. This innovative wheel technology offers both design flexibility and a unique aesthetic that GM sought for its new flagship car.
Engineering Excellence and Technological Innovation
Carbon Revolution’s Product & Manufacturing Engineering teams demonstrated their talent and experience by meeting GM’s stringent standards for weight, durability, strength, and aesthetics. The thin, split-spoke design of the wheels showcases the capabilities of carbon fiber technology, highlighting significant advancements compared to earlier designs and achieving the highest load rating yet for a performance car.
The intricate load paths in the wheel’s hub geometry and around the bolted joint necessitated a unique internal fiber architecture. Carbon Revolution’s proprietary Diamond Weave Technology played a crucial role in meeting GM’s high targets for strength, weight, and durability within the slim, split five-spoke design.
Industry Recognition and Future Production
The front wheels measure 20 inches in diameter and 10 inches in width, while the rear wheels are 21 inches in diameter and 13 inches in width, making them the world’s widest carbon fiber wheels. These rear wheels join Carbon Revolution’s lineup alongside the rear wheel for the eighth-generation Corvette Z06 and the E-Ray.
Carbon Revolution has designed these wheels for mass production on the company’s Mega-line. This statement comes after the firm won awards at the 2024 Automotive News PACE Awards, which recognize outstanding commercial performance, innovation, and technology progress among automotive suppliers.
